A Useful Dental FAQ
There so many questions people have about the dentist and their needs so we want to clarify that process. Finding good quality endodontics FAQ, dental implant FAQ or just some basic information is trickier than people imagine.
Q: How do I know if I need an endodontist?
A: Either your general dentist has spotted some deep-rooted infection around your tooth or you are experiencing some very deep pain. Your general dentist will refer you to Dr. Tatsuta. Dr. Tatsuta would evaluate and then clean and disinfect the infected nerve tissue chamber of bacteria, toxins and debris within the tooth and the ensuing destruction that may occure in the bone around the tooth. so that she can clear out all of the infection around the tooth. Her goal is always to try and save the tooth and save health.
Q: Don’t root canals hurt?
A: They shouldn’t. Endodontists can perform your root canal usually with little to zero pain. Many times, first time root canals can be done in one appointment while re-doing an old unsuccessfully healing root canal can be done usually in two appointments. You may have a bit of tenderness afterwards but Dr. Tatsuta is known for her delicate approach to endodontics. She also works efficiently so that she removes all of the infection for lasting healthful effects.
Q: Do I need a referral to see an endodontist?
A: No. A referral is not required from a general dentist to see Dr. Tatsuta. You can contact her directly for a consultation. She will evaluate each patient, explain findings, options and advise what she would choose if it were her mouth and tooth. We receive many new and returning patients without dental referral from our satisfied happy patients. She only performs endodontic work you need.
Q: Why would I need to see a periodontist?
A: If you are experiencing any of these symptoms with your teeth or gums, you may have periodontal disease:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Tooth sensitivity to heat or cold
- Deep pockets around the teeth
- Spaces between the teeth
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Missing teeth
- Receding gums
Periodontal disease (also known as periodontal infection, gum disease or pyorrhea) is a chronic infection in the gums around your teeth. The cause of periodontal disease is infectious bacteria that gets deep into your gums and causes tissue inflammation.
This infection starts destroying the bone that supports your teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. The infection can spread to adjacent teeth and even the heart.
Note: Many times, people don’t feel any pain from periodontal disease so if you smoke, have put off going to the dentist, have been lax in your brushing and flossing or have some other factors, seeing Dr. Okui is the best first step in assessing and fixing your situation.
And you don’t need a referral to see Dr. Okui!
Q: Isn’t getting my gums treated going to be painful?
A: Dr. Okui is a very experienced and talented periodontist. The office believes in laser treatment whenever possible. Laser treatment is a kind, gentle therapy. Sedation is often used so patients wake up with their treatment completed. Because of his expertise, patients feel very little if any pain.
Patients experience is a fresh feeling and confidence that their teeth have been effectively treated against periodontal disease.
Q: My teeth look pretty bad. Can they really be saved?
A: Many patients want to improve and save their teeth. Dr. Tatsuta gives you a thorough exam to determine if your teeth can be saved. Many times a CBCT (3D X-ray) scanner and surgical microscope provide the extra fine detail needed to better assess the viability of the remaining tooth and bone structure. Dr. Tatsuta is passionate about saving teeth. She works with the patient and a skilled dental team to ensure that as much of the dental structure is preserved as possible.

Q: If my teeth can’t be saved, what can I do?
A. No one likes to lose their teeth but if a tooth or teeth are causing pain and stress sometimes. It may be time to find another solution.
